Welcome to the Five Acres Animal Shelter Top 5 for June 8th, 2023!  In this edition you'll learn about an exciting new partnership, a summer adoption promotion, a very special cat named Bobber, and a look back at 2023 so far. Enjoy! 

FIVE ACRES ANIMAL SHELTER PARTNERS WITH PUPPIES FOR PAROLE! 

For the past 12 weeks, five dogs from Five Acres Animal Shelter have been a part of the Puppies for Parole program with Potosi Correctional Center. In this program, inmates at a local facility go through thorough training to become high-quality canine caretakers and handlers. Then, they are paired up with shelter dogs and train those dogs to complete the twelve-week Canine Good Citizen training. At the end of this twelve weeks, the dogs are confirmed as Canine Good Citizens, and then placed for adoption! These programs are successfully implemented nationwide, and you can learn more about how they work and their benefits to canines and their caretakers here. 

We are proud to report that Walker, Sol, King, Nina, and Sasha have all completed their training and are now qualified as Canine Good Citizens! We are also happy to share that Walker made such a good impression that he is being adopted by one of the guards! The other four are available for adoption and will stay with their caretakers until they are ready to meet potential adopters. This program has proven to be transformative for both dogs and their inmate caretakers, and we are excited to be a part of this new partnership. 

SUMMER ADOPTION SPECIAL! 

The Dog & Cat Days of Summer are here, and we have been running an adoption special during the first week of July to help match you with a new family member  Tomorrow, Sunday, July 9th is the last day to take advantage of this promotion! 

All adult (1 year or older) dogs and cats will have reduced adoption fees of $50!

Our 50th Anniversary Golden Paw Gala is coming up on Saturday, July 29th at Ameristar Casino in St. Charles - and seats are filling up fast! The Golden Paw Gala includes dinner, drinks, live & silent auction, photo opportunities with adoptable animals, video premiere, live music from musical duo Sir Dame, dancing, and more! Recommended attire is cocktail, and since it's our Golden Paw Gala we are encouraging lots of sparkle! The event will be emceed by long-time friend of Five Acres, Y98's Julie Tristan. 

Tickets are $125.00 each. Tables of 8 can be purchased for $1,000, and tables of 10 can be purchased for $1,250. You will not want to miss this special event! 

HELP BOBBER THE CAT!

Last week we had to rush Bobber to the vet due to an emergency urinary blockage. He spent 3 days with The Pet Doctor and Animal Emergency Clinic receiving round-the-clock care to ensure he would survive without surgery. In total, it cost Five Acres $2,000 to treat this sweet boy with magnificent whiskers

While at the vet, Bobber was also diagnosed with entropion--an often painful condition wherein the eyelashes are turned inwards and rub against the cornea--and he will need corrective surgery on his eyelid.

While Bobber has not had the best start in life, we are committed to making it better for him now that he is in our care.
