Welcome to the Five Acres Animal Shelter Top 5 for June 24th, 2023!  In this edition you'll learn about an opportunity to join our team of dog walking volunteers, the upcoming Golden Paw Gala, and a few needs at the shelter. Enjoy! 

JOIN OUR DOG WALKING SQUAD!

Five Acres is currently seeking new volunteers who are interested in walking our dogs. We ask that volunteer dog walkers commit to an assigned shift once a week. We provide hands-on training to support you as you learn all about our dog walking program. It's fun, rewarding, and ensures every dog gets the outdoor time they need to be happy and healthy while they await their adoption day.

WET KITTEN FOOD NEEDED!

Kitten season is in full swing, and our shelves are starting to run low on wet kitten food! These kiddos eat lots and eat often so they can grow big and strong. Our kittens eat Purina Pro Plan wet kitten food, and it can be ordered from our Amazon Wish List here and sent directly to the shelter.

Our 50th Anniversary Golden Paw Gala is coming up on Saturday, July 29th at Ameristar Casino in St. Charles - and seats are filling up fast! The Golden Paw Gala includes dinner, drinks, live & silent auction, photo opportunities with adoptable animals, video premiere, live music from musical duo Sir Dame, dancing, and more! Recommended attire is cocktail, and since it's our Golden Paw Gala we are encouraging lots of sparkle! The event will be emceed by long-time friend of Five Acres, Y98's Julie Tristan. 

Tickets are $125.00 each. Tables of 8 can be purchased for $1,000, and tables of 10 can be purchased for $1,250. You will not want to miss this special event! 

FIVE ACRES IS ROLLIN' IN PAPER TOWELS! 

Thank you to everyone who responded to our plea for paper towels! There was a large and quick response, and we are so grateful. You can imagine working at an animal shelter we go through so many different supplies every day. We are so thankful to be able to count on our community to help support these needs so all funds can go directly to the animals! 

DOGS, DOGS, AND MORE DOGS!

We are full and receiving multiple inquiries a day from people wanting to surrender their pets. In the last month, we received 57 inquiries from people wanting to surrender dogs. A few of those inquiries are for multiple dogs. We also have several partner shelters who are overfull and need organizations like us to pull dogs from them.

Without fosters or adopters to clear space in our shelter, we can't help out other full shelters or continue to be a resource for community members who can no longer take care of their pets. Summers are notorious for adoptions slowing down and shelters filling up with loose dogs, especially around the 4th of July, so we expect this trend to get worse over the next few weeks.

When you foster for us, we provide everything you need! We welcome short-term and long-term fosters. Taking a dog for even 1-2 weeks helps us learn more about the dog and gives that dog a break from the shelter.
